How do you learn the Alexander Technique?

The Alexander Technique (AT) can be best learned with the guidance of a certified AT teacher.  As a certified teacher, I trained for 1600+ hours and am skilled in the subtle use of my hands, keen observation and transformation of everyday activities. There are books and websites that supplement learning, but practical application will not be successfully acquired solely through reading.

Clients are "students"; we are "teachers" and not therapists, although most students will say the work is therapeutic. The AT is not considered traditional therapy since our wish is to teach you how to take care of yourself rather than to become dependent on a clinician.

Who benefits?

If you have a body, you can benefit from AT. I specialize in working with artists who develop repetitive stress injuries, people with disabilities, teenagers and adults with scoliosis, individuals who sit at computers, and others whose jobs or hobbies cause chronic pain. Regardless of age or physical capacity, almost everyone can feel better after a series of lessons.

Most people will know after 4-5 lessons if, in fact, they can benefit from the work and if they can learn well with their teacher, although most students take at least 10 lessons. Because we all learn differently it is difficult to predict exactly how many lessons you will need. You are always

welcome to return for a series of lessons or "tune-ups".

Private and Group Lessons

Students wear comfortable clothing and work on a table, in a chair, walking and in specific activities. Expect lessons to be fun as well as educational, and you may be given individualized "homework" that can be applied to  daily life. I can be available for phone or email communication between lessons, and I can also work with you at your home or place of business, if appropriate. I have worked with couples and have had guardians, partners, and friends observe children or elderly parents during lessons.

Unlike other practices, this Technique starts with you where you are in your body and caters to your specific needs. You are never too young or too old to begin changing your life, and it is never too early or too late to feel better!

Group classes may be a good choice for those who spend a great deal of time at work or engaged in a specific sport, hobby or activity. Classes may also be a good introduction to private study, or may be more financially accessible. Email or call of you want me to provide a workshop or presentation to your group. I am also available to work directly with bodyworkers and their clients.

Be creative-there are plenty of ways to learn this work!
